On Canada Day, the 12th training ride for the Summerside Cycling Club was the final criterium training before the Slemon Park Hotel & Conference Centre PEI BIke Fest on July 15 & 16. Two first-time training cyclists came out on this day: Paul Dalton (St. Louis, PE) and Harvey Chandler (Charlottetown).
They were joined by Dave Clark (Summerside), Mark Bowlan (Stratford), Wes Jackshaw (Summerside), Leo Flood (Kinkora), Jeff Proctor (New Hampshire), Jules Aucoin (Summerside), Ben Kennedy (Kensington), Rob Cook (Travellers Rest), and Ken Trenholm (Summerside).
The pack of 11 cyclists stayed together for the better part of the ride until a few laps before the first sprint.
A group of four riders built a gap on the others and entering the first corner of the sprint lap, Clark, Trenholm, Bowlan, and Jackshaw entered the corner.
Bowlan jumped the group from third position in the first corner. Trenholm eventually got on Bowlan's wheel by the second last turn to the sprint finish. Bowlan went a little wide in the last corner as both riders were off the saddle sprinting to the line. Bowlan captured first in the sprint by 5 bike lengths in front of Trenholm. Clark and Jackshaw took third and fourth for the sprint.
The lead group of 4 turned into a lead group of 3 following the first sprint.
At the second sprint location, 20 laps into the ride, Clark led out quickly followed by Trenholm and Jackshaw. Trenholm overtook Clark on the home stretch to take first in the second sprint, followed by Clark, Jackshaw, and then Bowlan.
The ride to the finish was a battle between Jackshaw, Clark, and Trenholm. Trenholm took the lead on the final lap and paced the trio. As Trenholm picked up speed, Clark was able to stick on his wheel dispute Trenholm attempting to shake him off. Coming out of the final corner, Clark was gaining on Trenholm but Trenholm managed to pull ahead and took first at the line, followed by Clark, and then Jackshaw.
Trenholm was the sole rider to improve his personal best on the course by 1 minute and 43 seconds. Jackshaw completed the course on a mountain bike.
All riders set strong times to improve on for the next criterium training ride.
The day was a hard finish for Ben Kennedy who blew a flat tire with half a lap left in the ride.
