The first training event for the Summerside Cycling Club marked the introduction of two new riders to the club for the 2006 year: Jeff Hemphill and Chris Silvaggio of Summerside. They were joined by Wes Jackshaw (Summerside), Rob Cook (Traveller's Rest), Ken Trenholm (Summerside).
The event started for the riders with a strong head and side wind that proved challenging to the riders. Jackshaw had the quickest time followed by Trenholm and then Silvaggio. Cook and Hemphill rounded out the field.
Trenholm broke his personal best for the course by 56 seconds and earned himself an additional 10 points for the ride.
The most impressive feat for the day however may be that Hemphill completed the course on a mountain bike and finished with a respectful time of 26 minutes.
The overall training ride results:
1. Wes Jackshaw (Summerside) 0:20:11 (36.90 km/h)
2. Ken Trenholm (Summerside) 0:20:45 (35.94 km/h) improved PB by 56 seconds
3. Chris Silvaggio (Summerside) 0:23:01 (32.38 km/h)
4. Rob Cook (Traveller's Rest) 0:24:42 (30.17 km/h)
5. Jeff Hemphill (Traveller's Rest) 0:26:50 (27.74 km/h)
The following points were awarded: Trenholm 57 (45-2nd; 10-PB; 2-start) Jackshaw 52 (50-1st; 2-start); Silvaggio 42 (40-3rd; 2-start); Cook 37 (35-4th; 2-start); and Hemphill 32 (30-5th; 2-start).
The 12.4 km time trial training ride is a part of a series of training rides organized by the Club to improve rider's strength, endurance, and conditioning in order to participate in the July PEI Bike Fest and the one day across PEI Biking for Breakfast August event. The next training ride is Wednesday May 24 at 6:15, meeting at Indian River Church; the next recreational ride is Saturday May 20 at 9 am at Shipyard Market.
