A Day for Personal Bests and Course Record at the Summerside Club
     June 14, 2006 — Ken Trenholm

The seventh training event for the Summerside Cycling Club was a day of personal bests, course records, and four first-time training riders: Mark Bowlan (Stratford), Ardelle Hynes (North Rustico), Kenny Sampson (North Rustico), and Scott Clark (Summerside).

These first-time riders were joined by Leo Flood (Kinkora), Chris Gallant (Summerside), Rob Cook (Traveller's Rest), Jules Aucoin (Summerside), Chris Silvaggio (Summerside), Ben Kennedy (Kensington), Ernie Schleichkorn (Summerside), Wes Jackshaw (Summerside), and Ken Trenholm (Summerside).

The atmospheric conditions played in the hands of the time trialists today with a slight SW wind.

An incredible nine Club riders improved their performance since their last training on the course two weeks ago.

The highlight would come from the saddle of Chris Gallant of Summerside, who cut 2:34 off his previous personal best. This ride earned Gallant the largest single course improvement in the Club's history -- a record that was set by Ben Kennedy just one week ago.

As for Kennedy, he continued to improve this personal best by leaps and bounds by snapping off 1:59 from his previous personal best.

The third most improved rider for the day was Chris Silvaggio (Summerside) who completed the course with an average speed of 34.93 km/h and took 1:48 off his previous best time.

Other riders that improved were Jules Aucoin (Summerside) by 1:30, Leo Flood (Kinkora) by 1:27, Rob Cook (Traveller's Rest) by 0:50, Wes Jackshaw (Summerside) by 0:48, Ken Trenholm (Summerside) by 0:40, and Ernie Schleichkorn (Summerside) by 0:06.

Another highlight of the day was Jackshaw's performance. Not only did Jackshaw improve his time but set a course record on the 12.4 km ride. Jackshaw finished the course in 19:04, six seconds faster than the course record set by Geoff MacDonald (Charlottetown) in 2005.

For the four riders who tackled the course for the first time, they will have an opportunity to return in two weeks and attempt to improve on the solid benchmarks they set for themselves during the ride.
